We often think of dental care only in terms of our teeth, but our gums are just as important. Your dentist would tell you that our gums are essential to our well-being and without them, our teeth would be unprotected and unsupported. That’s why it’s so important to understand these 4 facts about gum disease you might not have known. Keep reading to learn more!

Fact #1: Gum Disease is ‘Silent’

Part of the reason gum disease is such a threat is that it goes quietly unnoticed in its early stages. It’s so elusive, in fact, that up to 60% of people with gum disease aren’t aware they have it. The unfortunate truth is that patients don’t notice any symptoms until damage has already taken place.

Fact #2: Gum Disease Happens Gradually

Gum disease occurs in stages. They are:

Gingivitis. This is the early form that’s so difficult to detect. Unhealthy bacteria gather below the gumline and begin to flourish which can lead to infection.

Periodontitis. If the earlier stage isn’t caught in time, you’ll inevitably end up here. In this phase, your gums react to disease and infection by receding. They pull away from your teeth, leaving the vulnerable undersides exposed. Because they’re less supported they could even fall out.

In many cases, gingivitis can be remedied. Receding gums, however, are irreversible and require additional treatment.

Fact #3: All Ages Are Susceptible

There’s no age limit when it comes to gum disease. Anyone at any age, with or without any remaining natural teeth, can be affected. Even small children who don’t have all their teeth yet can contract it. Although dentists don’t see advanced gum disease too often in younger kids, gingivitis is just as common as cavities!

Fact #4: Gum Disease Can Be Prevented

Because it’s difficult to catch it in its earliest stages, it’s imperative to protect ourselves from gum disease in the first place. You can keep your gums clean and healthy by:

Brushing and flossing your teeth twice every day.

Limit your consumption of foods with high sugar content (which encourages bacteria growth).

Drink more water to regularly flush unwanted germs and particles from your mouth.

Curb unhealthy habits like using alcohol and tobacco.

Your dentist knows what indicators to look for in gum disease even in its earliest stages, so keeping up routine appointments every 6 months is the safest way to prevent it. Keep your gums happy and schedule your next visit today!

About the Practice

At Advanced Dental Concepts, our caring team puts customer service first so that you can feel calm and confident during each visit.
